In a police precinct on the lower East Side young typist Rose Baker coolly records the confessions of killers and gangsters. New York City, 1924: the height of Prohibition. 'Darkly, addictively entertaining, with a plot twist Hitchcock would have been proud of'. Unfortunately I feel it would have been stronger if it had ended a few pages earlier.'An enchanting jazz-age thriller. It was an engaging read and well written. The only reasoning that possibly makes sense is that she is completely crazy which, as a final twist to a book, is rather disappointing. Regardless of any of this, the line 'two can play at this gameвЂ™ with regards to Odalie also makes no sense because Rose has obviously lost as she is in a situation that she cannot get out of. Odalie being a figment of imagination isnвЂ™t possible because too many people interacted with her. If she did push Teddy and she is who the doctors say then the entire story is completly negated and makes little sense anyway as Teddy was sure Odalie was Ginevra. The final page with Rose suggesting that she pushed Teddy comes so out of the blue that it isnвЂ™t a shock, itвЂ™s impossible.

ItвЂ™s perfect and creepy and fitting all at once, but then it takes a turn for the bizarre. She cannot prove who she is and there is this small lingering doubt that her story may not actually be the true one after all. RoseвЂ™s unwillingness to open herself up to anyone other than Odalie has led her to become trapped in one of the worst ways imaginable. Indeed I feel that the absolute horror of realising that someone has completely destroyed your life by having people think that you are someone else and that no one will believe you because they believe youвЂ™re crazy (as unbelievable as that is upon closer inspection) was a perfectly fitting ending and twist as it really got a chill down my spine. ItвЂ™s caused people to talk about it, which is good, but many seem to be on the same page as me and wonder whether it was necessary to the story. It creates a shock for the ending, something to make you think, but when thinking I have to wonder whether the ending had any particular purpose at all other than just to shock and confuse the reading for the final send off. There are two sudden twists at the end and for the life of me I just cannot figure out how they make sense in context with the rest of the story. My only niggle is with the ending of the story. The book picks up speed as it gets past the halfway point but this does not affect the overall pacing and at no time does it feel rushed. It is well written, although a little slow at times but that is just part of RoseвЂ™s character. I have no real complaints about this book. Although she is the narrator it is a slightly unnerving read as we are made very aware that she is fallable and that everything that she is saying is through her own rose tinted glasses. It is a cleverly written tale, reminiscent of вЂSingle White FemaleвЂ™ in parts as Rose slowly becomes more like Odalie throughout the book. The Other Typist was a book that I was interested to read because it was not the type of thing that I usually read.
